JAN WANDELAAR (1680-1759) ANATOMICAL ENGRAVING, circa 1737

This graphic and gorgeous engraving comes from a famous early 18th century medical book by the renowned Dutch illustrator/engraver. What is remarkable about this piece is that full body illustrations were uncommon for another several decades. Wandelaar demonstrates his expertise as both an artist and a student of the human body. The refined details in the musculature around the knees and shoulders outshines Damien Hirst’s diamond encrusted skulls.
