HERBERT LIST, “ARKADIEN GRIECHENLAND” circa 1938
Herbert List (1903-1975) was German photographer who worked in a variety of genres including travel photography, war reportage, fashion photography, portraiture and Surrealism. Herbert Ritt’s iconic black and white images for Calvin Klein underwear from the 1980’s are directly inspired by List’s work.
This image appears in two of List’s books “LIcht ueber Hellas”, published in 1953 and (the contemporary re-edition) “Hellas”, 2004.
The Herb List estate commented on this print explaining that the images for the book were done in between 1937 and 1939 but due to the war not used until 1947. This image was printed in the 1950’s.
Several markings on the print reveal its provenance, including Christie’s London. The estate also explained that one of the Herbert List stamp on the back indicate that this was a press print used during the time the photographer lived in Munich at "Ainmillerstrasse 26".
Included with purchase is a copy of the book “Hellas”.
