PAIR OF HAND-BLOWN SMOKED GLASS VASES designed by JOSEF HOFFMANN
Modernist design got its foothold on the 20th century in Vienna with the founding of the Weiner Werkstatte (1903-1932). The most collected, cherished and versatile designer of this period is unquestionably Josef Hoffmann. Hoffmann and the Weiner Werkstatte embraced design characterized by clean geometric lines and an absence of ornamentation. This approach manifested itself in everything from teapots to private homes. See “Links & Learning” for a picture of Hoffmann’s Palais Stoclet.
Hoffmann and the Viennese design cooperative designed an array of objects and collaborated with many manufacturers or studios. Hoffmann designed this iconic vase produced by Moser, a major Czech glass company in 1922. Very good condition.
