JULIAN OPIE “RUTH WITH CIGARETTE, 1” 2005
Along with Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, Julian Opie is one of the YBAs (Young British Artists) that achieved fame and notoriety in Britain and internationally during the late 1990’s. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Opie’s work is neither provocative or theatrical and as a result his reputation and interest in his output has soared.
His iconic characters, or stylized stickmen, are instantly recognizable for their unique minimalist animation style. In recent years Opie’s characters have become mobile appearing on large sculptures made of LED screens. Examples of these works can be seen at the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, New York or in front of the Rogers Building on Bloor Street in Toronto. “Ruth With Cigarette 1” is a paradigm of Opie’s work; graphic, energetic and fun.
Numerous international museums own Opie artwork including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, The AGO and The Tate Modern, London.
