Nan Goldin

NAN GOLDIN "SELF PORTRAIT IN MY BLUE BATHROOM, BERLIN 1991"

Some of the most striking images in Nan Goldin's oeuvre are her self-portraits.

Throughout her career, Goldin has photographed herself from the chapters of her life whether positive or negative. Several of her most haunting images are of herself shortly after experiencing domestic abuse...yet there are also images documenting moments of joy (such as this photo here) ...or moments of personal introspection.

When one starts to explore Nan Goldin's record of her life one is struck by how much loss and violence she experienced, especially during the 1980's. Many of her friends and lovers were part of that first generation of AIDS victims.

Perhaps the onset of the 1990's were intended to be a new start for Goldin. As her career began to gain momentum she received a DAAD grant from the German government for an extended stay in Berlin. Finding a community in bohemian Berlin, she spent nearly three years in the city. “The best years of my life were here in Berlin” the artist has stated.

Some of her most iconic images were created in Germany during this period. One motif that was embraced during this era was a double representation of her subject, often gazing into a mirror.  For example one of Goldin's most iconic images from this period is "Joey in My Mirror, Berlin 1992"

Goldin's images of interiors, typically of bedrooms or other intimate, personal spaces are an impressive, but easily overlooked, segment of her oeuvre. Here in this Eggleston-like bathroom, Goldin makes an appearance. Her glowing complexion, red lips and curly hair at striking contrast to the sleek blue-tiled interior.

This quietly optimistic self-portrait, representative of Goldin’s happier years, can be found in the permanent collections of the Städel Museum, Frankfurt, the Foto Museum (Winterhur, Switzerland) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
