NAN GOLDIN "SMOKING IN MY ROOM. THE PRIORY HOSPITAL, LONDON", 2002

$2,450

Nan Goldin (b. 1953) is unquestionably one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.

She began her career in the 1970s, taking candid shots of her circle of friends, frequently drag queens and trans women. Throughout the 80's and 90's Goldin created some of the most memorable and intimate portraits.

Goldin moved to Paris in 2000.  Around this time the artist's work experiences a shift as more emphasis is put on interiors or the ambiance of a newly discovered city or environment.

In 2002, Nan Goldin spent time at the Prior Hospital in London due to mental health issues. The photos of this period are distant, detached, as if Nan had moved away from life. However, Goldin has always documented her surroundings during periods of recovery.

Reflections, mirrors and interiors are frequent motifs in Goldin's oeuvre. This work is striking for its almost monochromatic palette and how the overall forms are reduced to a geometric composition that approaches abstraction. The absence of detail, texture and color could be interpreted as a metaphor for depression...which is especially poignant considering the location of the image.
