Known for his large-scale tapestry-like metallic sculptures created from discarded resources, Anatsui draws meaningful connections between consumption, waste, and the environment. The artist is equally interested in decoration, through reuse, transformation, and a desire to connect to his continent and community throughout his practice.

Born in Anyako, Ghana, Anatsui is the son of a master weaver of Kente cloth. He trained at Kwame Nkrumah University in Kumsai, and taught as a Professor of Sculpture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) for four decades. During his time at UNN, Anatsui began incorporating southeastern Nigerian symbolism into his work, alongside his pre-existing indigenous Akinkra and Ghanian motifs, ideologies, and symbolism. Shortly after this creatvie evolution, he became associated with the Nsukka Group--a collective united by the goal of revitalizing the practice of Uli (a traditional southeastern Nigerian art form characterized by abstract designs inspired by natural forms) and incorporate its motifs into contemporary art.

Evoking political, historical, and visual references, Anatsui invites his viewers to engage with work that exists on its own terms. His fluid compositions take on different forms with each installation, responding directly to their environments and challenging long-held views on the parameters of sculpture. While they look like lusciously draped fabric from afar, the installations are made from sourced metal and carry weight both literally and figuratively.

Aluminum bottle caps are a key material for the artist, as he admires their versatility in form and colour, and their direct reference to modern society through their apparent branding. The fact that these ...each identifying a brand of drink, are no longer going back to serve the same role but are elements that could generate some reflection, some thinking, or just some wonder. By the 60s he had established a modest reputation in Toronto and beyond, joining the Gallery Moos stable in 1964. The legend goes that in 1967 thanks to a Canadian Council grant, Iskowitz took a helicopter tour of the north. The experience of seeing the massive expanse of trees from above inspired a major redirection of his aesthetic and material and approach.

This painting is from a group of 22 works that Iskowitz produced between 1984-85, titled Northern Lights. The paintings have similar compositions, with ovoid blips depicted punctuating an oscillating monotonous substrate. Referencing nature, the composition depicts the dynamic exchange of color and light. This painting is a perfect example of Iskowitz's ability to distill the natural world into cleverly abstracted compositions.

It is also worth mentioning Iskowitz's commitment to supporting future generations of Canadian artists. After his blockbuster retrospective at the AGO in 1982, Iskowitz established an eponymous foundation that would give out an annual grant to a contemporary artist. Click here to learn about the Gershon Iskowitz Prize.

Questions about this piece? Contact us, call +1.416.704.1720, or visit our Toronto gallery.

"Northern Lights #8"

Canada, 1984

Oil on canvas

Signed, dated, and titled, verso

33.5"H 38"W (work)

34"H 38.5"W (framed)

Very good condition

Provenance: Gallery Moos; Galerie Samuel Lallouz

Note: price is $29,500 CAD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0074/2712/files/Caviar20_Gershon-Iskowitz-Northern-Lights-_8-1984_01.jpg?v=1781904635
gordon-parks-drinking-fountains-mobile-alabama-1956
GORDON PARKS "DRINKING FOUNTAINS, MOBILE, ALABAMA" 1956

Gordon Parks (1912-2006) was one of the 20th century's most important photographers, celebrated for his profound contributions to documentary photography and photojournalism.

Parks used his camera to document American life with a remarkable clarity, compassion, and honesty.
