Sophie Calle (born 1953) is an internationally acclaimed French contemporary artist.
Highly conceptual in her approach, the artist’s projects often begin with material from her own life and imagination. Since the 1970s, her practice has engaged with the boundaries of private versus public consciousness.Â
Calle’s work is ambitious and interdisciplinary, often taking the form of books and installations that combine photography, video, text, and participatory performance. She returns to themes of intimacy and absence, exposing her own vulnerability on her own terms.Â
This diptych of her parents’ gravestones is a beautiful example of the artist’s fascination with death and desire. These dark concepts are not taken lightly, yet Calle never fails to insert her provocative sense of humor. In this photographic pair, her father’s gravestone sinks out of the frame with only the word “fat” seen in the crop. These precious photographs are gelatin silver prints mounted to aluminum in unique exhibition frames by the artist.Â
Her explorations of grief have continued throughout her prolific career. In 2007, Calle turned her camera towards her mother’s deathbed. What followed was a seven-year project entitled Rachel Monique dedicated to her mother’s life and a public mourning of her death. In her book And So Forth Calle writes about the impetus; “My mother liked to be the object of discussion. Her life did not appear in my work, and that annoyed her”.Â
Her installations, performances, and retrospective exhibitions have been shown internationally and her work belongs in major collections including the Tate and the Museum of Modern Art.Â

Our inventory is divided between New York and Toronto.Â
- Where do you ship to?
We can ship anywhere. Typically when we ship within North America we prefer to use FedEx or DHL. To Europe, Asia and beyond we generally use DHL.Â
-Â How much does it cost to ship?
For shipments within North America, we typically charge a flat rate fee. Many items on our site will list the rate. For shipping outside of North America, we can easily provide a quote and will look for the most efficient and economical option.
Most of the items on our site can be easily shipped internationally.
Occasionally we will recommend that an artwork be removed from its frame for shipping. Larger framed works are typically framed with plexiglass. We export over 80% of what we sell, so we are comfortable shipping anywhere.Â
-Â Are there additional taxes or fees?
When a work is valued above $2,500 usd there is a possibility of tax of 0.35%, but this is applied sporadically. There can similarly be an additional fee for customs brokerage and this can range from $20 - $65. US Taxes, duties and customs brokerage are not included in our flat rate shipping. However most of our shipments to the US enter without any additional fees.Â

Yes, we guarantee everything we sell. We can provide both a digital and printed version of our certificate of authenticity.Â
What is your return policy?

Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer. After 8 days returns are given a credit note. There is no expiration for our credit notes.
