Kosso Eloul

KOSSO ELOUL "ZEN-WEST", 1980

Kosso Eloul (1920ā€“1995) is one of our favorite sculptors and an important contributor to public art in Toronto. Born in Israel and educated in the United States, he first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago under Frank Lloyd Wright and later at the Chicago School of Design with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy.

Eloul represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1959 before settling in Toronto during the late 1960s, where he became known for his large outdoor sculptures.

Located at St. Michaelā€™s College on the University of Toronto campus, ā€œZen-Westā€ is one of the most elegant and impressive public sculptures in the city. This work is a maquette of Eloulā€™s beloved example of outdoor art ā€“ like the best of his work, it is created from three brushed aluminum rectangles captured in motion, never losing its intrigue or dynamism no matter the vantage point.

In addition to the numerous public sculptures in Toronto, Eloulā€™s works can be found in many other prominent public spaces around the world. Many major institutions have examples of his work in their permanent collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Israel Museum and the MontreĢal Museum of Fine Arts.
