David Urban (b. 1966) is a leading mid-career Canadian abstract artist.

Urban's well-developped and distinct style is easily recognized and immediately engaging.

While we can identify the influences of Kasimir Malevich, Philip Guston and several members of Painters 11, Urban's style is uniquely his own. He creates dynamic and intricate, often grid-like systems that can evoke cellular structures, organic compositions or at times undulating fine ribbon.

This drawing, powerful in its own right, can be considered as a preparatory work for a well-known full-sized canvas. Works on paper by David Urban are quite rare, especially from this early period of his career, which display the vigour of his early confidence.. This is an ideal piece for both a young collector or an established collection wanting to expand their representation of the artist.

His work can be found in prominent public and private collections across the country including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (Toronto), Le Musée des Beaux Arts (Montreal) and the AGO (Toronto). The latter two museums have also hosted solo exhibitions of his work.
