Beginning in the 1960's he achieved international recognition for his works that were on par with the leading American artists associated with color-field painting.

A graduate of Toronto’s OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design), and a key member of the Painters Eleven, Bush was hugely influential on the developing art scene of Toronto in the 1960s and 70s. Bush represented Canada at the 1967 Sao Paolo Biennale, and the Art Gallery of Ontario toured a retrospective of his work in 1976.

During these two decades, Bush also achieved commercial and critical success in New York and was praised and promoted by the esteemed art critic, Clement Greenberg. As a result of their interactions, Bush would become friendly with several of the artists affiliated with the color-field movement including Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland.

This instantly recognizable Bush print is a striking example of the artist's iconic style. Anchoring the composition is a maroon vertical form along the left edge, with vermillion, denim blue, and forrest green lines spreading outward from there to the outer edge of the sheet. Evocative of the best work in his career, this piece is defined by strong lines, passionate color tones, and a powerful simplicity.

However unlike many of his American contemporaries, Bush only realized a small number of multiples during his lifetime. This screenprint, along with the entire portfolio, is held in the permanent collection of the MoMA, New York.

Questions about this piece? Contact us, call +1.416.704.1720, or visit our Toronto Gallery.

"Stripes to the Right"

from the portfolio Five Colour Prints

Canada, 1965

Screenprint

Signed, dated, and numbered "22/100" in pencil, lower right

Published by David Mirvish Gallery, Toronto

26”H 20.5”W (work)

Very good condition

Note: price is $7,500 CAD

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0074/2712/files/Caviar20_Jack-Bush-Untitled-Stripes-Mirvish-1965_01.jpg?v=1786466668
