WILLIAM RONALD "ZACHARY" 1992-93
Prolific and polemic, William Ronald (1926-1998) is one of the most accomplished and collected artists associated with the Painters Eleven group.
Frustrated by the lack of representation of abstract painting, Ronald was pivotal in the founding of Painters Eleven in 1953. Their first show in 1954 was the first major commercial display of abstract art in Toronto to date.
In addition to pioneering the Modernism movement within Canada, Ronald was also well-regarded in the New York art scene of the 50s & 60s. He lived and worked there for several years, studying with Hans Hoffman and working on contract for Kootz Gallery alongside Adolph Gottlieb, William de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, among others. He moved back to Toronto in 1964, bringing with him a newfound enthusiasm and passion.
With a maintained interest in automatic painting, Ronald used a vocabulary of symbols, often arranging them centrally within his compositions. This jewel-toned painting demonstrates the vitality and dynamism of color for which Ronald is renowned.
Made during the last years of his prolific career, "Zachary" is bursting with movement, texture, and layered colors. A dynamic, theatrical confidence echoes through the marks, the forms holding their own weight in within the composition. While upon first glance the light area surrounding the central form fades, its texture and atmospheric depth are activated the longer its examined.
Paintings from Ronald's final years carried a confidence and gestural freedom that echo the gusto of his earliest work. This eye-catching canvas is a paradigm of Ronald's exuberance, and a wonderful example of his later style.
Ronald was regarded as a preeminent Canadian modernist in New York City and beyond, confirmed by the acquisition of his works by the Guggenheim and the MoMA in the 1960s. Today, his work is held in permanent collections of the AGO, Toronto; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Carnegie, Pittsburg; The Albright-Knox, Buffalo; the National Gallery of Canada; the Whitney, New York; among others.

Our inventory is divided between New York and Toronto.
- Where do you ship to?
We can ship anywhere. Typically when we ship within North America we prefer to use FedEx or DHL. To Europe, Asia and beyond we generally use DHL.
- How much does it cost to ship?
For shipments within North America, we typically charge a flat rate fee. Many items on our site will list the rate. For shipping outside of North America, we can easily provide a quote and will look for the most efficient and economical option.
Most of the items on our site can be easily shipped internationally.
Occasionally we will recommend that an artwork be removed from its frame for shipping. Larger framed works are typically framed with plexiglass. We export over 80% of what we sell, so we are comfortable shipping anywhere.
- Are there additional taxes or fees?
When a work is valued above $2,500 usd there is a possibility of tax of 0.35%, but this is applied sporadically. There can similarly be an additional fee for customs brokerage and this can range from $20 - $65. US Taxes, duties and customs brokerage are not included in our flat rate shipping. However most of our shipments to the US enter without any additional fees.
- Do you provide a certificate of authenticity?
Yes, we guarantee everything we sell. We can provide both a digital and printed version of our certificate of authenticity.
What is your return policy?

Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer. After 8 days returns are given a credit note. There is no expiration for our credit notes.
