Alex Katz (b. 1927) has been dedicated to art-making since the 1950's - however, it wasn't until the 60's when he established his signature 'flat' style. Over the succeeding decades, Katz kept the tradition of figurative art alive.
After graduating from Cooper Union in 1949, he attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. It was during this time that Katz first embraced printmaking, learned to paint en plein air, and developed a love for Maine & its flora that would last a lifetime.
"Poppy" is Katz's earliest flower print. In his signature style, Katz conveys the essential elements of the poppy: the layered fan of petals, the fuzzy stem, while the viridian background transport viewers to the exact poppy that Katz is examining.
Flowers have remained a favorite subject for the artist throughout his long career. He has been depicting and interpreting the flora and fauna or Maine including goldenrods, dogwoods, lilies, and tulips for over 60 years. See other examples of Katz's floral imagery here.
For Katz, printmaking has always been a key part of his process, and as an integral part of his oeuvre. Since the 1960's he has created more than 400 editions of lithographs, etchings, silkscreens, woodcuts, and linoleum cuts.
Impressions of "Poppy" can be found in the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Museum.
