CHRISTOPHER PRATT "SPRING AT MY PLACE", 1985
Christopher Pratt (1935–2022) is one of Canada’s most beloved and recognizable Maritime artists. Born in St. John’s, he dedicated the majority of his artistic practice to depicting scenes from the East Coast, both personal and imaginary, in his distinct version of minimalist realism.
Pratt received artistic encouragement despite being a science and engineering student while at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. He simultaneously began studying art and working with legendary Canadian artists such as Lawren P. Harris and Alex Colville who encouraged him to embrace fine art.
“Spring at My Place” is a breathtaking example of Pratt's evocative countryside landscapes. Using a crisp, vernal palette, Pratt portrays the facade of his white panelled home, its surface adorned with shifting shadows of nearby trees.
The quiet architectural/landscape depiction exudes the sensations of a cool spring day, amidst fresh pine trees and under a tranquil blue sky.
A master of the Canadian landscape, Christopher Pratt captures the essence of its seasons through his unparalleled fusion of realism and minimalism.
Pratt was the recipient of many accolades throughout his career, including the honor of being appointed an officer of the Order of Canada before becoming a companion of the Order in 1983. His work is celebrated in major public collections across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
