Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada’s most internationally renowned photographers.
A noted filmmaker, entrepreneur and environmental advocate, Burtynsky is best known internationally for his large scale images documenting the ramifications of industrial production on the environment. Burtynsky's work often presents a tension between wonder and desecration, reminding us of humanity's simultaneous dependence and lack of concern for the planet.
Images of industrial and environmental sites are aestheticized: Desecrated lands become beautifully removed, resulting in painterly, almost abstract images.
For this series, Burtynsky traveled to Gujarat, India, to the region of Little Ran of Kutch. In an intense 10-day helicopter shoot, images were captured of an age-old process of salt extraction from the floodplains of the Arabian Sea. Environmental and climate changes, poor governmental support, and diminishing market values threaten this 400-year-old tradition that has seen over 10 million lbs. of salt each year.
Rather than seeing the human world and the natural world as separate, these images remind the viewer of the constant dialogue between humans and their environments. It is here that Burtynsky captures the mark of human development on the earth and its embedded political, social, and economic consequences.
Burtynsky's work is represented in over 50 museum collections around the world ranging from The National Gallery of Canada, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, to Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Bibliothèque National, Paris.
