We are excited to be offering this amazing example from Frank Stella's iconic Copper Series.
Originally sold as an album, it is quite rare to find individual examples from the series. It is also worth noting that Stella typically created editions of 100 - "Creede II" is from an edition of 70.
These prints revisit/reinterpret one of Stella's most successful bodies of work; the Copper Series paintings from 1960-61. These paintings were some of the most celebrated and widely exhibited works from Stella's early career. Besides the captivating metallic coloring, these works were impactful for their highly original, curiously shaped canvases. Stella pushed painting to behave or appear more like sculpture. The color, mystery and ambition of these painting alluded to the strict palettes and ingenuity of early Cubism.
In 1970, Stella created a portfolio of 7 works, named after the mining towns in the mountains of Colorado that sourced silver and copper, active at the turn of the century. These lithographs were created using several screens of metallic copper paints and tinted varnishes.
Stella was an active printmaker and experimented with techniques to achieve a specific aesthetic. These works were first screenprinted before the lithographic inks and varnishes were applied - and as a result are far more complex than typical lithographs. Stella intentionally place the compositions of his early prints in the left corner as a strategy to emphasize his authorship of his prints.
