HAROLD TOWN "IN AND OUT" SAP, 1955
One of Harold Town's (1924-1990) most noted attributes is his versatility and unpredictability. Throughout his career he oscillated between genres and styles, between dynamic color and black & white, between abstraction and figuration.
Town's breakout body of work were the "Single Autographic Prints" created during the mid-1950's. While there are certainly many common characteristics in these monotypes - there are plenty of variations, anomalies and beautiful experiments.
This work "In and Out" is a fine example of Town's versatility - yet aesthetically it seems closer in style to something by Robert Motherwell or even Ray Mead. Dominant, monochromatic forms - found here on both the upper and lower half of the composition - are not obviously elements that Town favored.
Despite its somewhat exceptional construction this must have been a meaningful work for Town as he signed, dated and gave it this friendly evocative title.
It comes directly from the estate of Harold Town.
An essential work for a collection of post-war Canadian abstraction.
