David Hockney

David Hockney (b.1937) is one of the most influential contributors to European Pop Art and one of the most valuable, versatile, and distinctive British artists of the 20th century. The artist came to prominence in the 1960s with his depictions of quirky domestic scenes and queer relationships.

Hockney is a master of many art mediums, having worked with photography, collage, drawing, painting, set design, and printmaking. His style has changed numerous times during his lengthy career, yet his work is always identifiable for a certain optimism and je ne sais quoi joy.

In the 1990s, the artist made a slight diversion to focus on sunflowers. While the subject is rich with reference to titans such as Van Gogh, Monet, and Vermeer, Hockney's sunflowers are distinctly poignant, serving as a symbol of impermanence during a period of profound personal loss.David Hockney, Sunflowers.
