Edward Burtynsky
EDWARD BURTYNSKY "HIGHLAND VALLEY MINE #10", 2008
Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada's most successful photographers.
Growing up in Southern Ontario, Burtynsky’s proximity to a local General Motors plant inspired interest in the relationship between industry and the environment.
In the late 1990s Burtynsky established his reputation based on his images of the consequences and processes of using the earth's natural resources, initially focusing on his home province.
Over the years, Burtynsky has crossed the globe exploring how the earth's resources are extracted and consumed.
The mine series illustrates Burtynsky’s interest in the mark of human development on the earth and its embedded political, social and economic consequences.
The artist quotes, “What this civilization leaves in the wake of its progress may be the opened and emptied earth, but in performing these incursions we also participate in the unwitting creation of gigantic monuments to our way of life”.
"Highland Valley #10" displays the artist’s characteristic focus on the formal qualities of his image: the chiselled earth of this Canadian quarry forms a dizzying linear spectacle, while the enormity of the landscape shrinks the transport vehicles and buildings scattered throughout the image.
Note: Burtynsky images typically are released in three sizes. This work is considered the largest at 5 feet wide.
