Edward Burtynsky
EDWARD BURTYNSKY "ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE - BACKSTAGE", 2007
Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada's most successful photographers.
A noted filmmaker, entrepreneur, and environmental advocate, Burtynsky is known internationally for his large-scale images documenting the interaction of industry and natural resources.
Although Burtynsky is a celebrated landscape photographer, in 2007, he was commissioned by David Mirvish to create the Royal Alexandra portfolio in celebration of the theatre's 100-year anniversary. The result was an elegant portfolio featuring 10 images that capture the grandeur and backstory of the historic performing arts venue in Toronto.
In this image, Burtynsky captures the details of a collage made of historical cast photos backstage. The wall is covered with headshots and clippings of famous alumni who have performed at the theatre over the years. Below the portraits is a collection of posters from past productions including the musical Les Misérables and a festival devoted to Brecht.
This very rare series stands out as a remarkable and impressive departure from one of Toronto's most accomplished artists working in one of the city's most beloved venues.
Burtynsky's work can be found in over 50 museum collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Guggenheim, The MoMA, and the Tate Modern.
