Kent Monkman

Kent Monkman (b.1965) is a Canadian First Nations artist of Cree ancestry and one of Canada's most acclaimed and notorious multidisciplinary artists today.

Over the last 20 years, Monkman has developed a distinct visual language that hijacks traditional landscapes and pictorial scenes, adding homoerotic revisionist anarchy to Canadian colonial images.

Kent Monkman "Montcalm's Haircut" Canada, 2011. Etching and aquatint on paper. The piece showcases Monkman's iconic alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testicle, stealthily trimming General Montcalm's hair as lies naked, fast asleep. Perched on the edge of the bed, Miss Chief meets the viewer's gaze with brazen confidence, despite being caught in the act.KENT MONKMAN "MONTCALM'S HAIRCUT" ETCHING, 2011
