Kosso Eloul
KOSSO ELOUL "MILGO X", 1971
Kosso Eloul (1920-1995) is one of our favorite sculptors and an important contributor to public art in Toronto.
In addition to the numerous public sculptures in Toronto by Eloul, his works can be found in many other prominent public spaces around the world, from California to Israel.
Most familiar with Eloul associate his work with his signature forms; large brushed aluminum (or steel) angled rectangles that defy gravity.
Eloul was born in Israel but educated in the United States. He first studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (under Frank Lloyd Wright) and later at the Chicago School of Design (with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy). He would return to Israel in 1946 and focus on his artwork while teaching. He would represent Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1959. It is only at the end of the 1950's that the artist fully embraces abstraction.
Around 1962 Eloul meets Rita Letendre, and within two years he leaves Israel, following her to first Montreal and then Toronto. As a couple they seem to influence each other and both of their artistic practices reaches maturity, ushering in critical and commercial success. By the end of the 1960's they have spent time in New York and California.
This sculpture is emblematic of Eloul's iconic style. Larger-scale versions of this sculpture have been exhibited around the world including variations in New York, Toronto, and Mexico City. These angled sliced rectangles and their medium are iconic Eloul.
Several major institutions have examples of his work in their permanent collections including the Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the Israel Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to mention a few.
"Milgo" is not only the name of this sculpture, but the name of the fabricator that made many of Kosso's largest public sculptures including Toronto's "Meeting Place" and Kingston's "Time".

- Where does the inventory ship from?
Our inventory is divided between New York and Toronto.
- Where do you ship to?
We can ship anywhere. Typically when we ship within North America we prefer to use FedEx or DHL. To Europe, Asia and beyond we generally use DHL.
- How much does it cost to ship?
For shipments within North America, we typically charge a flat rate fee. Many items on our site will list the rate. For shipping outside of North America, we can easily provide a quote and will look for the most efficient and economical option.
Most of the items on our site can be easily shipped internationally.
Occasionally we will recommend that an artwork be removed from its frame for shipping. Larger framed works are typically framed with plexiglass. We export over 80% of what we sell, so we are comfortable shipping anywhere.
- Are there additional taxes or fees?
When a work is valued above $2,500 usd there is a possibility of tax of 0.35%, but this is applied sporadically. There can similarly be an additional fee for customs brokerage and this can range from $20 - $65. US Taxes, duties and customs brokerage are not included in our flat rate shipping. However most of our shipments to the US enter without any additional fees.

Yes, we guarantee everything we sell. We can provide both a digital and printed version of our certificate of authenticity.
What is your return policy?

Return shipping is the responsibility of the customer. After 8 days returns are given a credit note. There is no expiration for our credit notes.
