Louise Nevelson: Essentials

Louise Nevelson’s intricate and architectural black sculptures are beloved internationally. Over the course of 4 decades, she was also a restlessly inventive printmaker. This important part of her oeuvre deserves more attention. Nevelson made prints with niche materials like paper pulp and lead tiles. In each decade she expanded her practice, her palette and her aesthetic.

Louise Nevelson "By the Lake" Working collage. 1996. This particular maquette has a few variations from the final print. Most notably the stark background is replaced with a cerulean blue and Nevelson's hand-written notes vanish. "By the Lake" is the only work in the series that appears on this muted blue background.
