Motherwell Late Prints

Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) is one of the essential American abstract painters who radically defined post-war abstraction in New York City.

In addition to his impressive paintings, Motherwell is also revered as one of the most innovative and prolific printmakers of the 20th century.

From the early 1960s until his death in 1991, Motherwell worked tirelessly in search of new techniques, whether at his own printmaking atelier or collaborating with others, to expand his ideas and express his aesthetic.

While best known for his bold and black forms, "Motherwell Late Prints" places an emphasis on works from the mid 1970s onwards that feature lighter palettes, playful arrangements, and elements of collage.

"Motherwell Late Prints" is on now until mid-August. Enjoy the exhibition online or book an appointment to visit our Toronto gallery space at 647 Dupont Street!

"The Persian II" Aquatint, lift-ground etching, and aquatint on Whatman paper. 1985. This bold aquatint is classic Motherwell; an imposing black form resembling a thick brushstroke, spilled ink, or even tar, is set against a dense field of rust. These intense colors are contrasted with a soft but saturated periwinkle blue. "The Persian II" Aquatint, lift-ground etching, and aquatint on Whatman paper. 1985.
