Nan Goldin

NAN GOLDIN "MY HOTEL ROOM, VALENCIA, SPAIN" 1987

$14,500

Nan Goldin (b. 1953) is unquestionably one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. A successor to Diane Arbus and William Egglestone, her aesthetic and creative approach has had a tremendous impact on the realms of photography and fine art. She was the first to use the "slide show" format in a fine art setting, and elevated the familiar snapshot into an art form.

Although Goldin is widely recognized for her portraits, her interiors and still lifes constitute an equally significant aspect of her oeuvre. Her most recent work places an increased emphasis on travel, interiors and scenes that are void of people – yet despite their absence, the images remain full of life, mystery and ambiance.

Goldin's images of interiors are unconventional vehicles for revealing parts of herself. Hotel rooms are intimate places, temporary landing-pads with infinite potential. Acting as a self portrait of sorts, this photograph reveals Goldin's sleeping habits, reading material, convenience store purchases, outfit changes, and countless other minute details that reveal themselves as the photograph is examined.

While the objects and arrangements in the room leave much to consider, the image acts also as an exploration of texture and colour for the artist. Boasting a vibrant yellow throw blanket over firm mattresses that have been pushed together; all the pillows stacked onto one bed; a stained, brown carpet; studied scraps of paper; boxes and boxes of Kodak film that is perfectly camouflaged against the garish blankets; a roll of toilet paper; a telephone; and several pumps strewn across the foreground...Goldin's image offers a topographic survey of her life, daring viewers to follow along.

While we can infer to what happened in the room, there's also an inherent emphasis on what is no longer. The ambiguity and intimacy present in this piece is a key theme throughout Goldin's photographic output.

This print was made using a positive-to-positive process where high-quality color prints are made directly from slides. These cibachrome (also sometimes known as ilfochrome) prints are known for their exceptionally vibrant and accurate colors, sharp image clarity with a luminous quality, and archival longevity.
