FRANK STELLA "CLUB ONYX", 1967
Frank Stella became a printmaker in 1967 - "Club Onyx - Seven Steps" comes from this crucial debut year.
Working in Los Angeles at Gemini G.E.L. (one of the top American printing studios) Stella revisited some of the forms and motifs from his groundbreaking "Black Series" paintings.
However his prints were not smaller reproductions of his paintings. Stella notably played with composition (preferring to place the designs on the left) and this placement became a signature motif for his prints for the next decade.
He also created several innovative printing techniques, such as the lithographic crayon, which gave the illusion that the work was hand-sketched.
This artwork from the Black Series encouraged the evolution of several movements in abstraction including hard-edge abstraction and minimalism.
"Club Onyx - Seven Steps" is particularly notable, compared to its siblings, as it is the only composition from both Black Series that has a double non-matching form.
The Black Series I can be found in many museum collections including the Tate (London), the National Gallery of Art (Washington) and the MoMA (New York).
