JEFF KOONS "GREEN FUN" LITHO, 1998
Jeff Koons, as polemic as he is, is one of the 20th century’s most ambitious and audacious artists.
Known as a quintessential neo-pop artist, Koon’s creations frequently imitate everyday objects. In these creations, the artist intermingles ‘low’ popular culture with ‘high’ arts, similar to his pop predecessors.
Throughout his career Koons has appropriated children's motifs, particularly mass-produced toys. Some of his signature works involve Play-Doh, balloon animals and assorted cartoon characters.
In 1999 Koons introduced the "Easyfun" series which presented colored mirrors in the shape of cartoon or stylized animal faces. Koons described the “Easyfun” series as “just as simple as a pack of crayola”.
This optimistic and playful print is a fine example of Koons work from this era. The line drawing aesthetic could have been created from the same pack of crayons that inspired the work. Koons is adept at simultaneously subverting the tradition of fine art while embracing the color and spirit of youth and commodity cultures, creating work that is truly.... “Fun”.
The “Easyfun” series was part of the Whitney Museum of American Art’s 2014 retrospective of the artist. Click here to learn more about the series.
