Pat Steir

PAT STEIR "LARGE LINE" ETCHING, 1976

Pat Steir (b. 1940) is a renowned American painter, printmaker, and poet.

Steir is best known for her dynamic "waterfall" paintings, abstracts that involved dripping, pouring, and splashing, iconic techniques that were established as a motif that Steir embraced in the late 1980s. Steir's earlier work employed abstraction in a quest to destroy images as symbols. To make the image a symbol for a symbol. Throughout her history, Steir's practice has been informed by East Asian painting traditions that prioritize intuitive renderings over direct observation.

Building on these concepts, Steir developed her own idiosyncratic method, employing free-form paint splatters to create expressive and unmediated compositions. Attuned to spiritual practices and traditions, Steir's work is simultaneously reflective of the natural world and deeply introspective.

"Large Line" is an early example of Steir's ethos. Featuring her exploration of lines and mark-making in various forms, this work is divided into grid-like sections that are effectively labeled as if to serve as an intimate study. Despite the inherent simplicity of this piece, Steir juxtaposes the contrasting use of lines passing through condensed blocks, calligraphic grids, text, and simple color shapes to interrogate its diverse function in art. Created in the mid-1970s this work demonstrates a shift away from minimalism, in favor of work that was more expressive, poetic, and complex.

During this era, Steir's art incorporated her poetry and often included inscriptions reminiscent of journal entries. In this work, a personal note "for Jane W. who knew which way the wind blew" is mirrored and inverted on both sides of the page.

Steir's work can be found in permanent collections across the nation including the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Tate Gallery (London).
