Pierre et Gilles

PIERRE & GILLES "MIDNIGHT COWBOY" PHOTO, 1996

Pierre & Gilles (Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard) began collaborating in the 70's and quickly established a signature style merging pop culture, kitsch, and art history in vivid, fantastical images.

Working together Pierre & Gilles collaborate on ideas, sets, and costumes. Pierre takes photographs while Gilles paints the image once printed to canvas. The paintbrush acts as photo retouching, illuminating and enhancing to create a vividly surreal luster.

In France during the late 70's Pierre & Gilles rose to fame after creating portraits of Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, and Andy Warhol for Façade magazine. This attention garnered them further commercial collaborations with avante-garde courtier Thierry Mugler and on advertisements for Absolute Vodka.

Pierre & Gilles' style often draws from religious, mythological, or historical contexts with nods to pop culture and cinema thrown in. With images often dense with glitter, bordering on kitsch, their hyper-saturated mise en scène showcase their distinct and iconic aesthetic. Nods to their influence can be seen in the kitschy, pop surrealism of photographers David LaChapelle and Miles Aldridge.

Pierre & Gilles have placed some of the most famous faces into their fantasy worlds. (i.e. Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Kylie Minogue, Catherine Deneuve, Tilda Swinton). "Midnight Cowboy" features gay adult film star Aiden Shaw and is also the cover image on Shaw's collection of poems titled "If Language at the Same Time Shapes and Distorts our Ideas and Emotions, How do we Communicate Love?". Shaw has published several novels, including an autobiography explaining his decision to leave the adult industry in 1999 focusing on his struggles with sex work and addiction.

Pierre & Gilles offer a beautified gay adult film star in all of his naked glory on a paradoxical alter of colorful plush toys and stuffed animals.
