Brian Rideout

BRIAN RIDEOUT "STUDY FOR ACP (WESSELMANN)" 2022

Brian Rideout (b. 1986) is a Toronto-based painter best known for his distinctive and contemplative luxe interiors. Referencing both modernist interior design and 20th-century collecting patterns, Rideout's work is playful and "meta" as he confronts two elements of painting's identity; documentation and decoration.

Rideout's esteemed series "American Collection Paintings" operates as a visual record, chronicling interior design preferences validated and promoted by magazines such as Architectural Digest. Based on printed material found there and other "high brow" publications, Rideout reproduces (with varying exactness) sumptuous private spaces and their accompanying art. Ironically the interiors are anonymous, and geographically ambiguous, except for the canonical or trophy artworks that live in these interiors.

While the presence of a painting within a painting is not unheard of in art history, as Velasquez, Vermeer, and a number of Impressionist painters created such works, in Rideout's work world-famous paintings become the main subject.

While Rideout typically works in a large format, "Study for ACP (Wesselmann)" is a striking and intimate study that continues his "American Collection Paintings" series.

The work depicts a bedroom corner, including the top half of a rumpled bed, which is supervised by one of Tom Wesselmann's legendary shaped canvases. Rideout also decorates the room with one of John Dickinson's plaster tables and a mid-century painting that could be an early Leon Polk Smith.

Here lies the magic of Rideout's paintings. Is this a real interior? If so, who lives here and when? And did they acquire all of these precious pieces - or are they borrowed from other shelter magazines, auction catalogs...or the artist's imagination?

Caviar20 has long admired Brian Rideout's work and we are pleased to be offering this painting as part of our Toronto20 exhibition.

Rideout's work can be found in collections including the Royal Bank (Toronto), the National Bank (Montreal), and Estée Lauder Collection (New York). In 2017, Rideout was the recipient of Ontario's Emerging Artist Award - The Premier’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts.
