Christo (1935–2020) was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century environmental and installation art. Working with Jeanne-Claude, he transformed familiar buildings, monuments, and landscapes through temporary acts of concealment. Their projects challenged conventional ideas of sculpture and public space, emphasizing transformation, scale, and the ephemeral nature of art.
Both realized and proposed projects are stunning examples of land art, installation and public sculpture. While their output consisted of large-scale temporary artworks, the couple also sold sketches, collages, and editions to finance their ambitious projects. The temporary nature of their work is perhaps its most alluring aspect. Only preparatory drawings, prints, and collages remain after the installations are dismounted.Â
This print was created for the Official Arts Portfolio of the XXIV Olympiad in Seoul. The work depicts Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s proposed intervention at Munich’s Glyptothek, a museum devoted to ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. Their plan envisioned wrapping the museum’s interior and its sculptures in fabric, temporarily obscuring forms that had been preserved and displayed for centuries. Through concealment, Christo sought to make the familiar newly visible. The edition combines screenprinting and collage to capture this transformation, translating an ambitious and ephemeral proposal into a richly layered work on paper.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work is held in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Art Institute of Chicago. Their work is also represented in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
