CHRISTOPHER PRATT "GIRL WITH STRIPED TOWEL" DRAWING, 1973
Christopher Pratt (1935–2022) is one of Canada’s most prolific and recognizable Maritime artists. Born in St. John’s, he dedicated the majority of his artistic practice to depicting scenes from the East Coast, both personal and imaginary, in his distinct version of realism.
Pratt achieved early artistic encouragement and success while studying pre-engineering and pre-medicine at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. There, he showed his work to professors Lawren P. Harris and Alex Colville who encouraged him to embrace fine art.
“Girl with Striped Towel” depicts a woman standing in contrapposto as she adjusts her undergarments. Rendered through a culmination of fine lines, Pratt’s delicate crosshatching results in a gentle and meticulous composition exemplary of his austere aesthetic. This work on paper serves as a striking example of his technical skills as a draftsman, expertly capturing the woman’s delicate physique with a light hand and keen precision.

Pratt was the recipient of many accolades over the course of his career, including the honor of being appointed an officer of the Order of Canada before becoming a companion of the Order in 1983. His work is celebrated in major public collections across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
