DAN CHRISTENSEN "GRID", 1998
Dan Christensen (1942-2007) was born and raised in Cozad, Nebraska, and received his BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1964.
Christensen is widely recognized as one of America’s foremost colour abstractionists. Over the course of forty years, he was devoted to exploring the limits, range, and possibilities of paint and pictorial form.
During the 1980's and 1990's in particular, Christensen focused on experimenting with different forms of washing, spraying, and layering colours over top of each other. The works from Christensen's late period combine the gestural drama of Abstract Expressionism with the stained surface look popularized by the color field artists.
Identified as one of most recognizable American colour field painters, Untitled, (Grid), is a wonderful example of Christensen’s pursuit of experimental colour application. The cheerful and playful pinky hues define this 1998 acrylic on paperwork, which also features iconic layered washes of paint. Christensen’s dedication to experimentation is demonstrated especially by the brushwork, we can see varying shapes and thicknesses in the paint application, while the techniques seem to range from gentle wash to more aggressive scratching into painted layers.
Over the course of Christensen's lengthy career, he has had numerous solo exhibitions in both galleries and renowned institutions across America and beyond. His works can be found in such museums including the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the Metropolitan, the MoMA, and the Albright-Knox Gallery, among many others.
