Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is one of Canada's most successful photographers.
He is renowned internationally for his large-scale photographs documenting the ramifications of industry on the environment. Burtynsky's work often presents a tension between wonder and desecration, reminding us of our simultaneous dependence and lack of concern for the planet.
Burtynsky began an extended project in 2008 that focuses on the use of water as a resource, and the conflicts and complications embedded in humanity's relationship to it.
Burtynsky has worked extensively in China and his images have defined their astonishing growth and ambition in the 21st century. The Xiaolangdi Dam is a perfect subject for the artist. Like the best of Burtynsky's work, there is something both menacing and reverential in this depicting this epic engineering project.
Set on the Yellow River in Henan Province, China, the titular structure stands almost completely engulfed by a rushing deluge as it is released from the spillway. Upon close examination, details of the Dam are just visible through the spray. The otherworldly russet hue of the water comes from silt and sediment carried through the river. The rushing burst of water looms dramatically, like a vast, whirling nebula. At once beautiful and foreboding, Burtynsky’s images lay bare the volatile tension between human progress and the natural world.
Burtynsky's work is represented in over 50 museum collections around the world ranging from The National Gallery of Canada, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, to Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Bibliothèque National, Paris.
