Caviar20 is proud to be offering this fine example of Frank Stella's early prints.

Stella's work references many of the key developments or movements in post-war American painting; geometric abstraction, color field painting and Minimalism.

The prints that made up the "Purple Series" each bear the name of an individual from the New York art world (who was important in Stella's life). The series is particularly significant as, while it alludes to the success of his shaped canvases, the slightly muted grape-colored purple is unique and does not appear in any of his paintings. It is also a great art historical snapshot of who the key players were in the American art world at the beginning of the 1970's.

Stella began printmaking in 1967 - and it immediately became an essential part of his oeuvre. In terms of process the "Purple Series" is the second and the last group of prints to be created from lithographic stones.

Like most of Stella's prints from the late 1960's and 1970's - this work can be found in the permanent collection of many institutions including the MoMA and others.
