GERSHON ISKOWITZ "UNTITLED (FURROWS)" 1962
Gershon Iskowitz (1921–1988) developed a singular approach to landscape, gradually moving from observed nature toward an increasingly abstract language of colour, rhythm, and light across his career.
For the majority of his career, Iskowitz showed colour in his artwork. However, drawing remained a consistent parallel studio activity for the artist (the AGO maintains a collection of sketchbooks with landscape drawings such as this one from the early 1960s - 1981).
Working with short, closely arranged marks, Iskowitz constructs an idealized view of the Ontario countryside. Through variations in the intensity and spacing of the lines, he skillfully suggests the landscape, inviting viewers to complete the image through their own perception and engagement with the scene.
The marks vary in density and spacing, creating subtle shifts in depth and a nice oscillating sense of movement. Rather than relying on conventional representation, he constructs his composition through repetition and accumulation, allowing the landscape to emerge from an almost pointillist vocabulary. The result is both methodical and atmospheric: a recognizable natural scene distilled into its essential visual elements and evoked emotions.
"Untitled (Furrows)" reveals the disciplined observation and technical precision underlying his practice. This and other drawings of this era convey Iskowitz's unique understanding of the visual world and his skill as a draughtsman.
