Greg Gorman (b. 1949) is a renowned fashion photographer who established his reputation in the late 1980's. His bold images are most frequently created in black and white, which he considers the essence of photography. His portraits are frequently void of specific backgrounds and are shot using minimal lighting to maximize contrast and shadows.
Gorman describes himself as "always being drawn to the outsider". This fascination comes from a belief that they are more tangible, more realistic people, and thereby, easier to form an intimate connection with. Using this, he captured some of the most influential personalities and styles that defined the end of the 20th Century.
Gorman is well-known for his stark, honest portraits of famous and infamous celebrities. The subject of this image, Jeff Stryker, was an adult entertainer and somewhat of a cult figure. This photograph played a significant role in solidifying Stryker as a mainstream figure.
The picture is sparse in its use of lighting, with Stryker's face illuminated from a single source. He seems almost lost in a contemplative smoulder as though working through a problem. The framing is intimate, tightly cropped and in stark profile as though Gorman stumbled wandered in to the room and Stryker didn't notice.
Eye-catching and striking, this photograph demonstrates Gorman's skill and excellence in portraiture.
