Jack Bush

Jack Bush (1909-1977) is Canada's most successful abstract artist of the 20th century.

Bush was a graduate of OCAD (Ontario College of Art & Design) and a key member of Painters Eleven. Bush was one of the very few Canadian, Toronto-based artists who achieved an international reputation.

Bush had an unrivalled level of success in New York and beyond after being praised and guided by esteemed critic Clement Greenberg. Bush was able to evolve beyond Painters Eleven and became linked to both Color Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction (which emerged and thrived in America). As a result Bush was associated with artists such as Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland.

Unlike some of his color-field contemporaries, Bush only realized a small number of prints during his lifetime.

This work "Cross Over" is from a series of five serigraphs sometimes referred to as Totems, due to the forms that dominate the composition. Dating from 1974, this is work is exemplary of Bush's style and palette from this era.

Works from this period are distinguished by their layered backgrounds. Bush devised this technique, initially on large-scale canvases, with sponges. This is subtly but distinctively different from his works of the 1960's where the color on odd geometric forms is applied quite flatly.

One of Bush's best attributes is his fantastic use of color. His serigraphs from 1974 revel in their somewhat unconventional yet very pleasing combination of colors that are uplifting and decorative.

These serigraphs rarely come to market - and today are the most sought-after prints in Jack Bush's oeuvre.

This work can be found in several prominent museum permanent collections including the Tate (London).
