"Either/Or" is a fantastic and iconic example of Josef Albers. This is an ideal piece for a young collector or someone looking for a little gem by the master of color interaction.
In 1973, York University (Toronto) awarded Albers and his wife Anni honorary Doctorate degrees. In celebration of this honor, the Art Gallery at York University published an accompanying catalog "Homage to Josef Albers" along with a hand-numbered serigraph of one of Albers' iconic squares.
Josef Albers (1888-1976) is affiliated with, or an active participant within numerous movements that have defined visual culture in the 20th century. Albers was a student and later a professor at the Bauhaus in Germany. After the prestigious academy was closed by the Nazis, Albers and his wife Anni (a noted textile designer) emigrated to the United States. While Albers is best known for his series “Homage to the Square”, he was also a significant mentor and taught major artists including Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, and Eve Hesse at Black Mountain College and Yale.
Art Historians credit Albers for fusing elements of American and European abstraction while influencing minimalism, hard-edge painting, and Op art. This serigraph, in a bold, saturated red color, is a perfect representation of his aesthetic and his contribution to 20th-century abstraction.
