LOUISE BOURGEOIS "GIVE OR TAKE (MORNING)" 1990

$0

Louis Bourgeois (1911-2010) is one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

She has earned her place in the canon for her exceptional contribution to Modern sculpture.

"Give or Take (How Do You Feel This Morning)" is an affordable paradigm of her work from one of her best periods of creation.

Bourgeois began her artistic career as a painter and printmaker but turned to sculpture in the late 1940’s.

Similar to Louise Nevelson, Bourgeois' early works used found materials, including discards from construction sites.

Borugeois' sculptures, regardless of material, posses an interesting tension between abstraction and figuration.

Rich with illusion and abundant references to sexuality, domesticity and power, Bourgeois was able to master different material and push her practice in a way that her distinguished her from her contemporaries.

For a certain generation it is hard to imagine that for several decades Bourgeois was a marginal figure in the art world.

It wasn't until the mid-1980's that Bourgeois' international reputation was cemented with a (long-overdue) retrospective at the MoMA.

Over the next decade Bourgeois would have the financial success and critical acclaim leading to major international commissions - such as her giant "Spider" sculptures.

In 1993, she represented the United States at the Venice Biennale.

This cast bronze sculpture is an exceptional example from this era.

Today, virtually every gallery of Modern Art has a work by Louise Bourgeois.

To experience more of Louise Bourgeois' work, Caviar20 highly recommends a visit to DIA:Beacon to see a major semi-permanent exhibition of her sculptures and works on paper.
