LOUISE NEVELSON "THE DARK ELLIPSE", 1974
Caviar20 is excited to be offering this fantastic sculpture by the inimitable Louise Nevelson - one of the most revered and unique sculptors of the 20th century.
Her work has had an undeniable influence on a host of significant artists including Tony Cragg and Louise Bourgeois.
Over the last few years there has been tremendous momentum in the renewed interest and appreciation of her work. In November of 2014, a new auction record of just below $1 million was established for one of Nevelson's signature black construction sculptures.
We've also noticed that more and more public collections are re-installing her works in their displays from their permanent collections (the Whitney in New York City and the Pérez Art Museum in Miami are notable examples)
Like the best of Nevelson's work "The Dark Ellipse" alludes to tribal art and utopian or post-apocalyptic architecture.
Nevelson only created a small number of multiple sculptures. This is an impressively sized example that has major presence.
