Michael Snow (1929-2023) is one of the most remarkable multi-disciplinary Canadian artists. He is renowned for a diverse body of work that ranges from experimental films and jazz recordings to sculptures and large scale public art. No matter the medium, Snow’s unparalleled ability to alternate between populist and avant garde art remains consistent.
"Walking Woman," Snow's largest and best known body of work, features a silhouette modeled on friend and fellow musician Carla Bley. Snow would realize this form in a multitude of incarnations – paintings, large scale sculptures, newspaper ads, street art and film.
Along with silhouettes, Snow frequently used collage throughout his oeuvre. This work highlights the outline of a figure. Set against a bright orange sheet, the brown shape conveys a man standing head-on, with his arms hanging along his sides. His features are exaggerated, his extremities stretched and distorted, evoking a sense of comical hyperbole and creativity.
The layered physicality of this piece personifies the figure, emphasizing each curve and detail. Upon close inspection, a second layer of paper and ink are layered under the brown figure, emphasizing its form. With interacting elements, this collage demonstrates Snow's playful and thoughtful creation process.
Today, Snow's work is held in numerous public collections including The MoMA (NYC), the Art Gallery of Ontario, and The National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa). In 1981, Snow was awarded the Order of Canada and upgraded to a companion in 2007 in recognition of his international contributions to visual arts.

Our inventory is divided between New York and Toronto.Â

We can ship anywhere. Typically when we ship within North America we prefer to use FedEx or DHL. To Europe, Asia and beyond we generally use DHL.Â
-Â How much does it cost to ship?
For shipments within North America, we typically charge a flat rate fee. Many items on our site will list the rate. For shipping outside of North America, we can easily provide a quote and will look for the most efficient and economical option.
Most of the items on our site can be easily shipped internationally.
Occasionally we will recommend that an artwork be removed from its frame for shipping. Larger framed works are typically framed with plexiglass. We export over 80% of what we sell, so we are comfortable shipping anywhere.Â
-Â Are there additional taxes or fees?
When a work is valued above $2,500 usd there is a possibility of tax of 0.35%, but this is applied sporadically. There can similarly be an additional fee for customs brokerage and this can range from $20 - $65. US Taxes, duties and customs brokerage are not included in our flat rate shipping. However most of our shipments to the US enter without any additional fees.Â
