MURAKAMI "MR. WINK" SCULPTURE, 2000

Often compared to Andy Warhol, Takashi Murakami (b. 1962) is a prolific, versatile and internationally renowned superstar artist.

Working in an array of media, unencumbered to the distinctions between high art and commercial products, Murakami's hypercolor anime-inspired motifs are instantly recognizable.

This sculpture/multiple was created in 2000. (Before his career was catapulted from collaborating with Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton) It was commissioned as part of The Peter Norton Family Christmas Art Project.

Every year since 1988 the computer software entrepreneur/philanthropist/collector invites a high-profile contemporary artist to create a multiple that the Norton family gives to a select group of friends and colleagues.

The Murakami sculpture has become one of the most iconic and sought-after pieces from the Nortons. Murakami's was especially ambitious, it had multiple moving  elements including a special music cd hidden inside.

Instantly recognizable, "Mr. Wink" is a fantastic example of Murakami's inimitable aesthetic.
