Peter Schuyff
PETER SCHUYFF "GREY ABSTRACTION", 1980
Peter Schuyff (b. 1958) is a Dutch-born American artist who experienced considerable success in the 1980's. He is known for his dynamic abstraction that features graphic shapes created by a complex technique of building up layers of paint through which light emanates and mysteriously penetrates from the surface.
After moving from Canada to New York in the early 1980s, Schuyff became a seminal figure in the East Village art scene, which included Ashely Bickerton, Peter Halley, Philip Taaffe, and others involved in the Neo-Geo movement. During that period and into the 1990's Schuyff exhibited with the best art dealers/galleries of the era: Leo Castelli, Pat Hearn, Paul Kasmin and Tony Shafrazi.
Caviar20 is excited to offer this early work by Schuyff which was exhibited at the artist center YYZ, in Toronto (Canada) just prior to his relocation to New York City.
At this early stage of his career, the YYZ provided him space and support to create freely while respecting his practice. It’s interesting to notice that 'Grey Abstraction' already explores patterned fields of geometric shapes, ribbon lines and vortices. The last two images show the artist at work on the material shown in Toronto in 1980.
Today Peter Schuyff's work can be found in almost every major American museum collection including MoMA, the MOCA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
