Tony Scherman

TONY SCHERMAN "BRIGITTE BARDOT" ETCHING, 1999

$1,250

Tony Scherman (b. 1950) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. Scherman's sumptuous portraits (whether contemporary, historical or allegorical) reference art history's masters, ranging from Goya to Manet, yet his works are visceral and contemporary.

Brigitte Bardot (b. 1934), also  known by her initials of B.B., is a legendary French actress and international sex symbol. Bardot first began acting as a teenager and rapidly rose to prominence in French cinema. By portraying sexually liberated characters with hedonistic ways (and occasional nudity), Bardot became a worldwide sex symbol in the late 1950's.

In the early 1960's Bardot's global popularity helped introduce French New Wave cinema to the world. Both on-screen and off, Bardot's persona was one of beauty, sexual liberation, and the joie de vivre she effortlessly exuded and pursued.

At the height of her fame in the 70's, Bardot escaped the fate of similarly doomed starlets who had tumultuous relationships with fame and left acting to pursue her true passion - animal activism.

In this beautifully rendered etching, Scherman has captured Bardot's iconic beauty. With her signature winged eye makeup, parted pillowy lips, and tousled blonde bouffant updo, Bardot the screen siren is instantly recognizable. Unlike many images of Bardot, she appears neither seductive nor seduced, with an ambiguous expression held in her large, dark eyes.

Tony Scherman's unique prints do not come to market frequently. This work is a rare affordable entry point for a young collector interested in Tony Scherman.

Today the artist's work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris).
