Wolf Kahn

WOLF KAHN "MOTHER & CHILD" PASTEL, 2002

$9,500

Wolf Kahn (1927–2020) was a German-born American painter celebrated for his distinctive fusion of Realism and Color Field painting. Working primarily in oil and pastel, Kahn transformed familiar landscapes through unexpected colour, simplified forms, and atmospheric light.

Bold and evocative, Kahn's work is instantly recognizable for its extraordinary palette, where vibrant, fauvist hues enliven forests and farmlands, resulting in otherworldly atmospheres that teeter between abstraction and representation.

Kahn worked extensively in Vermont, where he and his wife, artist Emily Mason, maintained a summer home and studio from the late 1960s. He drew regularly outdoors and in his pastel studio. Pastel was central to Kahn’s process. He drew regularly from life, both outdoors and in his studio, using the medium to investigate colour, light, and form. The quick, textured marks of his pastels also informed his approach to painting, where he translated their dry, expressive quality into layered strokes of pigment.

This bright drawing drawing depicts two rural barns rendered in luminous chartreuse, lime green, lavender, coral, and periwinkle. The architecture is reduced to broad geometric planes, while the surrounding landscape dissolves into loose, expressive passages of colour.

Kahn was particularly drawn to barns, which he began depicting in the 1960s. Rather than treating them as conventional landscape subjects, he used their strong architectural forms as a framework for exploring colour and light. Here, the barn’s solidity contrasts with the atmospheric treatment of the surrounding field and sky. The result is both recognizably rural and strikingly abstract. Kahn’s pastel technique further emphasizes this relationship, allowing individual marks and areas of exposed paper to remain visible within the composition.

His landscapes, while grounded in the familiar, seem to exist beyond the realm of reality due to their fascinating and vibrant colors. This compact yet punchy work is a paradigm of his aesthetic and his approach.

Kahn’s work is held in most major collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
