David Hockney (1937–2026) is one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century and is arguably the most important British contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s.
Hockney has experimented with and mastered numerous artistic mediums, including photography, collage, drawing, painting, set design, and printmaking. His style has evolved throughout his lengthy career, yet his work remains identifiable for its optimism, visual ingenuity, and je ne sais quoi joy.
This print was created in 1992 in conjunction with Hockney’s production design for Richard Strauss’s opera Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow) at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. It followed his ambitious designs for Puccini’s Turandot at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, which had occupied much of his time over the preceding two years.
Hockney's involvement with opera was more than a theatrical diversion; it provided an opportunity to explore colour, perspective, architecture, and the illusion of space on an expansive scale. His theatrical experiments would inform his Very New Paintings, a colourful series he began developing in 1992, further illustrating his multidisciplinary practice.
The composition translates the fantastical atmosphere of the opera into a striking graphic image. Through expressive colour, simplified forms, and an layered sense of deep space, Hockney demonstrates his remarkable ability to distill complex visual ideas into an accessible context.Â
