Robert Rauschenberg
ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG "IN + OUT CITY LIMITS", 1979
Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is revered as one of the most innovative American Pop artists. More avant-garde than Warhol and more audacious than Jasper Johns, Rauschenberg worked experimentally with many mediums over the span of six decades, often applying them experimentally and in combination to create boundary-pushing, curious, and thought-provoking pieces.
Rauschenberg studied at Black Mountain College, which was known as a hub for experimental thought and practice. He developed his innovative approach to creation and collaboration, most notably, with fellow artist Jasper Johns. Upon moving to NYC in the 1950s, Rauschenberg and Johns would began a back and forth that would go on to define both artists' styles and subjects, as they pushed the boundaries of "mundane" representation.
This image is from a photographic series captured from 1979-1981. The series evolved from an early 1950's ambition--that began during his time at Black Mountain College--to capture the United States "inch by inch."
Here we seen a neon sign meant to call to a passing traveller. When given time to process the image we can notice that the woman depicted is herself a kind of collage of mediums and subjects very reminiscent of Rauschenbergs' earlier body of work. Both light art and representation. Two elements occupying the same space at one moment to form a unified whole.
Today, Rauschenberg's work is included in public collections around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art (NYC), Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (Spain), and Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) to name a few.
